How To Set Up Angle Grinder

Eugene is a trained engineer and self-taught home improvement enthusiast with most 40 years of professional and DIY experience.

How to Apply an Angle Grinder Safely

An angle or manus grinder is a ability tool regularly used past construction workers and contractors. All the same, it's too an invaluable tool in the dwelling house workshop or around the house, with a multitude of uses for DIY and crafts. As the proper name suggests, it can exist used for grinding and cut but also sanding and wire brushing. Merely like whatever power tool, grinders tin be dangerous if used incorrectly. This guide shows you what safety precautions to take before and during cutting and how to cut properly.

I can't mayhap cover every detail in this guide, and it's in no manner a substitute for reading the instruction manual supplied with your tool!

Bending Grinder Uses

Angle grinders are used for cutting and grinding

  • Iron, steel and other metals
  • Metallic roof cladding, corrugated fe and other steel sheeting
  • Brick, rock and concrete
  • Slates and building tiles
  • PVC waste piping
  • Rusted bolts which can't be undone
  • Rebar in concrete
  • Welds on steel and besides cleaning of welds

Sharpening

  • Spades, hoes and axes
  • Lawn mower blades

Sanding and wire brush accessories are used for:

  • Removing paint
  • Cleaning rust from steel
  • Sanding woods

If you need to cut upwardly stuff for disposal in your trash, an angle grinder is invaluable. Sure, you can apply a hacksaw for doing virtually of these tasks, merely a grinder is super quick. Angle grinders make use of a deejay of abrasive material spun at a high rotational speed past an electrical motor in order to perform the cut action.

Types of Paw Grinders

Angle grinders can be powered by compressed air or gas (petrol). Even so, mains powered or cordless versions are the most probable types to be used by the average DIYer.

Precautions to take when using a grinder

  1. Make Your Piece of work Environment Safe
  2. Employ Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  3. Cheque Your Grinder is in Good Condition and Rubber to Utilize
  4. Cull the Right Disk For the Task
  5. Use the Grinder Correctly

one: Make Your Piece of work Environment Safe !

All work environments demand to be safe, but when using a power tool, a trip or autumn tin can result in a serious accident. Tools are frequently driven by powerful motors or engines and the business end of the machine can be an annoying cutting disk, a bract with abrupt teeth or a abrupt drill bit. As the saying goes "flesh is no match for steel", so safety is paramount.

Here are some tips:

  • De-clutter Your Workspace. Tool boxes, scattered tools, lengths of steel and timber and power cables can crusade trips and falls. Keep everything to one side where it can be accessed if needed.
  • Illuminate Your Workspace Adequately. Proper illumination using background lighting and an optional floodlight/spotlight ensures that you lot can see what you are doing and don't accept to strain your optics. This is specially important when using goggles which can somewhat obscure vision if they get fogged or dusty. Personally I find a caput torch is groovy every bit it directs a beam of low-cal exactly where needed. Alternatively you can work outdoors if weather conditions allow it. The advantage of this is that sparks are less likely to exist a hazard, illumination is better and grit and fumes tend to misemploy
  • Power Cables and Flexes. Keep these behind you so they can't end up getting cut or tripping you up.
  • Provide Adequate Ventilation. Grinding and cutting will produce dust and metal particles, sparks and fumes. Open up doors and windows and try to direct sparks away from you.
  • Flammable Materials. Remove gasoline(petrol), diesel fuel, gas cylinders, solvents, sawdust and other flammable materials from the piece of work expanse. If this is not possible, direct sparks away from these items. Newspaper and oily cloths are also a fire hazard.
  • Pelting and Water. Don't work during rainy atmospheric condition or use a tool which has become wet without drying information technology thoroughly. For added safety, ability the bending grinder from a socket or extension lead fitted with a GFCI (RCD) adapter.
  • Jewelry, Loose Wearable and Earphones. Remove jewelry and bracelets, loose clothing such as scarves and anything else which could peradventure get caught up in the rotating grinder disk and shaft. If y'all have long pilus, go on it up under a cap
  • Fire Extinguisher. Make certain you accept one of these handy in the event of burn. The extinguisher should be of the proper course. A powder extinguisher is suitable for class A, B and C fires
  • Exist Enlightened of Those Around You. Go on children and pets out of your work area

2: Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be worn to protect your hearing, lungs, optics, hands and feet from injury. Clothing and gloves should be tight plumbing equipment and so that they don't get defenseless and pulled into the tool.

  • Center protection. Safety goggles need to be worn to protect eyes from flight particles and sparks. These should exist to EN166B , ANSI Z87.i or equivalent standard. A full-face visor/shield is highly advisable and gives additional protection.
  • Ear Protection. Muffs or earplugs will lessen the take a chance of hearing damage.
  • Hand Protection. Gloves provide protection from sparks, and small fragments of deejay and waste metallic thrown out by the disk. They also protect your hands from general vesture and tear, i.due east. minor cuts, scuffs and abrasion. Gloves may give some protection from hot sharp edges of cut metal, but this depends on the rating of the glove and thickness/fabric used. Some people propose that gloves should never exist worn when using an angle grinder because the tool could be classed every bit rotating machinery and gloves could get defenseless in the disk. However, this shouldn't happen during normal use as both hands are holding the grinder and the guard should be in place. In any instance, gloves should exist tight fitting and not "baggy", so that y'all tin can hold the tool securely.
  • Breathing Protection. Apply a suitable dust mask to protect against fumes and dust particles. This should seal properly around the face up. Tiny particulate matter (dust particles) entering your lungs over a prolonged catamenia can eventually cause lung disorders, mayhap even cancer.
  • Footwear. Vesture steel toe cap shoes or boots with good grips. If you lot are working with heavy items which could drib when cut up, this will protect your toes. Footwear should also incorporate steel insoles to protect anxiety in the consequence of walking on nails or other sharp objects in the piece of work area.
  • Overalls and/or Leather Apron. These protect wearing apparel from sparks. You can of course use quondam clothes, simply avoid combustible materials. Watch out for sparks falling into pockets or turn-ups.

three: Check Your Grinder Is in Good Condition and Safety to Employ

An angle grinder like any ability tool should exist maintained in good condition and given a quick inspection before utilise. Check out the following:

  • Flex and Plug. The flex should be deeply fastened to the tool and plug. Exposed cores in the flex at these entry points (where damage ofttimes occurs), should be remedied past rewiring the plug or grinder. Cracked and damaged flexes with exposed inner cores should be replaced.
  • Check the Guard. The guard on an bending grinder is an essential component which should be in place at all times. It protects the user from sparks thrown upward and backwards and too takes some of the touch if the deejay shatters, by deflecting chunks of material downwards. Information technology too may give some protection for your face if the grinder falls back against you while grinding overhead (a exercise which you should try to avoid. If there is no culling, always clothing a total confront visor). The guard should be adjusted to the right angle, giving maximum protection by deflecting sparks and disk fragments away from the operator. If the grinder needs to be used in a confined location or to make a vertical cut, the guard should be adjusted to suit. Commonly it is simply necessary to loosen screws or a bolt, twist the baby-sit and re-tighten the fastener. Whatsoever build up of slag on the inside of the guard should be periodically removed.
A secondary but equally important function of the guard is to shield the dorsum of the disk from making contact with your hand, potentially causing a serious injury.
  • Side Handle. This should be tightly screwed into the tool.
  • Ventilation Slots. These should be kept clear to prevent overheating of the motor
  • Use a GFCI (RCD) adapter. You lot volition probable accept 1 of these fitted at the "fuseboard"/ electrical console, but as added insurance against lethal electrical daze in example this fails, it's wise to use an adapter on the plug of your grinder or extension lead. For more details encounter this article: What Causes Electric Shocks? How an RCD Can Potentially Save Your Life

4: Choose the Right Deejay for the Task

  • Employ the Proper Disk for the Material Being Cut. (east.thousand. masonry or metallic)
  • Check the Disk for Defects. Cracks, missing chunks or other defects in a disk are a potential run a risk. Never apply a damaged deejay which could potentially shatter and throw out fragments at high velocity with fatal consequences
  • Never Use a Cutting Disk for Grinding. Cutting disks are thin and not designed to withstand side pressure, dissimilar disks used for grinding. They can over flex and shatter. If you grind with the side faces of a cutting disk, this will thin the disk, overstress it and potentially event in a disk explosion, showering you with disk fragments. Grinding disks shouldn't be used for cutting either
  • Disks Should Never exist Used at a Rotational Speed Greater Than They Were Designed For. Disks are marked with the maximum RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) specification which should match the grinder they're used with. The larger the disk, the lower the maximum speed it tin rotate at. This ways that you shouldn't use a worn-downward 9-inch deejay on a 4 1/2 inch grinder
  • Make Certain the Flange Nut is Suitable for the Deejay and Tightened Fully
  • Make Sure the Disk is Seated Properly Before Tightening. Usually the flange nut is turned upside downward when used with thinner disks, otherwise the spigot or raised rim around the perimeter of the hole in the nut will prevent the nut from clamping down on the disk.
  • Don't Use a Disk Later on the Utilize by Date. Grinder disks have a use past date. This is due to a concern nigh moisture and/or ageing resulting in softening of the binding resin and weakening the disk. Disks may be perfectly ok after the utilize by date, but it'south better to play prophylactic, not stock upwards on disks and apply them before the engagement marked. Disks should exist kept in a absurd dry place
  • The "hollow" on a depressed centre disk should be facing outwards.

Types of Disks

  • Ceramic or white aluminium oxide disks are available for cutting and grinding harder steels such as stainless steel.
  • Thinner disks are used for cut metal sheeting such as roof cladding. These cut quicker with less friction so there's less impairment to protective blanket/paint on sheets. However, they also vesture away somewhat quicker.
  • Diamond coated disks tin exist used for cutting brick, stone, concrete, slate and roof tiles.
  • Not-Abrasive Disks for Metal. These are a relatively new innovation and similar to disks used for cut masonry. The edge of the deejay is coated with diamond particles. These have three major advantages over traditional bonded abrasive disks:
    1. The disk is steel and much less probable to shatter.
    2. No employ-by date issues unlike bonded abrasive disks
    3. Cutting doesn't produce sparks.

Disk Sizes

Angle grinders are commonly bachelor that take 4 ane/2" (115 mm), 5" (125 mm) and nine" (230 mm) diameter disks

Accessories for Bending Grinders

Knotted wire brushes are available for cleaning and removing rust and paint from metallic and wood. These can fling out steel bristles and so you lot demand to wear centre and face protection.

You tin can also use sanding disks. These attach to a safe/plastic pad fitted to the grinder. A sanding pad can get into spaces inaccessible to an orbital or belt sander.

Don't use attachments not designed for the grinder, e.g. circular saw blades. I don't recommend the use of "chainsaw" type circular attachments equally these are extremely dangerous if they become blunt.

5: Use the Grinder Correctly (Precautions and Safe Cutting Techniques)

Be Warning

Be alert at all times and watch out for the unexpected and others coming into your workplace. Children should never be in the vicinity while using dangerous power tools.

Don't Utilise Power Tools in Wet Weather condition

Don't use an angle grinder in the rain because you may end upwardly getting an electric daze. The shock could startle y'all and the likelihood is that you could drop the grinder and potentially cause injury to yourself. Also, cordless tools aren't waterproof and may be damaged if water gets in the cooling slots.

Avoid using a grinder overhead

If possible, don't employ a grinder overhead you because if you lose command, it could drop down on superlative of you.

Don't use a grinder if you lot are tired

Tiredness can result in poor concentration and the possibility of an accident and personal injury. Keep your feet spread autonomously. This braces your body improve and makes information technology less likely for you to be thrown off balance.

Ensure that the power flex and any extension cords are backside y'all and tin't autumn into the path of the cutting disk. If the work-piece isn't heavy, hold it in a vice on a bench or clamp it to a surface.

Never hold a slice of metal in your paw to cut it!

I did this once and the grinder disk caught in the metal, flung it upwards into the air, and I didn't find it until a month after on top of a shelf! You tin usually hold a length of metal down by continuing on it with ii anxiety, however, information technology's questionable whether this is safe. The danger is that the disk could snag in the metallic and rip it from under your feet, causing you lot to lose your balance, especially if you lot're using a 9-inch grinder. If cutting outdoors, lengths of steel tin exist supported on brusque sections of 9 ten two or similar then the disk doesn't brand contact with the ground. Position the cutting indicate so that it overhangs the support. This ensures that the weight of the waste will open up the cutting as the material falls abroad.

Don't cut in the span betwixt 2 widely spaced supports

The cut may close upward equally you cutting through, potentially causing the deejay to bind. Use acceptable support either side of the cut indicate. Alternatively cut so waste projects out from a single support point and the cut opens up every bit waste falls away. Waste material can potentially twist however as it falls away, so you lot need to think alee and predict how it will bear to minimise the risk of a disk getting trapped.

Never use a grinder without a side handle

The side handle gives you more command over the tool in the event of kickback and torque reaction (the body of the tool twisting nigh the heart of rotation of the disk if it snags).

Don't position your body backside and in line with the plane of the rotating disk

Hold the grinder to 1 side so that the tool and wheel won't hit yous in the event of kick dorsum.

Hold the tool with a firm grip using both hands

Keep one on the body of the grinder and trigger and the other hand on the side handle. Don't employ it unmarried handed. If the disk gets stuck in the work-piece, it is almost sure that it volition exist pulled out of your grip and potentially cause an accident. Even while holding a grinder with two hands, you lot need to be prepared for this, peculiarly when using a large nine-inch grinder. If the disk binds, release the trigger immediately to avoid called-for out the motor and if the disk is still turning, allow information technology to come to a finish before removing it from the cutting.

If you are cutting, you will probably have a guideline drawn on the workpiece. Start the grinder, permit the disk to reach max speed (Large grinders may have a slow start-up feature to prevent the "kick" on ability upward) and place the disk gently in contact with the back of the work-piece so that you cut towards yourself. Yous can cutting from the front of the workpiece, however, it can be more hard to control the grinder as the deejay tries to climb out of the cut or moves down in front end of the edge of the metallic existence cut. When cutting from the back, the disk is less likely to driblet over the edge as the workpiece is nether the back of the disk.

Brace your artillery in case the grinder kickbacks in the cut

If yous are cutting on the basis, keep your legs out of the style in example the grinder slips. If a climbing cut (cutting from the front end of the workpiece with sparks existence thrown downward) is essential because material must be cut in identify and can't exist held in a vise, make certain certain you lot keep your head out of the mode. Otherwise, you can exist hitting in the confront if the grinder kicks back upwards. This is why I reckon it's safer to cutting stuff on the footing where information technology'due south at arm's length and further away from the face up. Utilize gentle and abiding pressure and the metal will start to become red hot. At this stage, it becomes softer and cuts easier.

Don't force the disk into the cut. This can overload the motorcar or cause information technology to grab on the workpiece

Angle the grinder then that sparks are thrown backwards either to one side of your legs or between your legs. Don't allow them to concentrate on i point on your clothes for any length of time or they will cause them to ignite (been there, washed that!). A leather apron although cumbersome will protect clothes.

Keep the disk direct and avert twisting it in the cut slot to prevent it sticking and causing kickback

If the disk binds, information technology tin can shatter or throw out fragments.

When the waste material is almost cutting away, take care that the disk doesn't get trapped

Cut through the fabric and permit the waste to fall away or move to one side. Remove the disk from contact with the cloth, release the trigger on the grinder, allow the disk to spin downwardly to a stop, lookout man out that y'all don't scuff the flex with the deejay and only then let it to rest on the footing. The workpiece and waste will be extremely hot at this stage, so allow them to cool down before handling.

Don't walk effectually your work area while holding a grinder which is powered up. This applies to all power tools

Grind off precipitous edges on the workpiece and waste matter

Steel and other metals will have razor precipitous edges after being cutting with a grinder. Exposed edges should exist ground off (it isn't essential to do this if cut ends are being welded and covered, but the ends of waste material sections should be ground before being put back into storage.)

Go along your two easily on the grinder at all times and hold it firmly until you release the trigger and the disk comes to a end

If you use the grinder single-handed, you lot run a risk losing command of it.

I accept had modest accidents while moving a grinder while holding information technology with one paw and not keeping track of where my other hand was. Luckily these were just small scuffs. This is why it is of import to vesture gloves.

It's probably safest to cut on the ground if y'all're cutting long sections of metal because they can exist supported underneath and simply drop a few inches equally waste is cut away. Also, the grinder volition exist depression downwardly and less probable to cause an injury if for some reason it dropped out of your hands. Unfortunately, if you have a lot of material to cut, and practice this on a regular basis every bit function of your job, this practice would probably crusade back strain long term. And then cutting at waist level would be advisable.

Where Should You lot Keep Your Caput?!

Debris is thrown out in the airplane of the disk and the guard should catch anything which comes in your direction. This is why a baby-sit should be used at all times. Offset your caput to the right side of the guard (the closed side) for full protection. Some grinders are provided with a guard which encloses both sides of the deejay for added security. However this tin can exist more cumbersome and obstructive while working.

Clamp the workpiece firmly in a vice and start cutting from the back. Small pieces should always be held in a vise or clamped while cutting, otherwise they can go flying! Direct sparks backwards.

Keep your feet spread apart for stability. You can let the sparks fly backwards between your legs, alternatively you can stand to one side of the workpiece.

Support long sections of material so they don't sag, trapping and binding the disk

Support long sections of material so they don't sag, trapping and bounden the disk

The best way to cutting metal cladding is to first mark the cutting line using a Tippex mode marker. Then cut through the ridges first, followed by the valleys. I institute the best way to avert kickback is to cut the ridges from the back, pulling the grinder towards me, and so cut the valleys, pushing the grinder away from me. Because cladding is so thin, the disk tin can tend to catch in the edge and the grinder will wiggle. So y'all need to experiment to avoid this. If you tin imagine a tangent to the edge of the disk, this should be at an acute angle to the sheet to avoid communicable. In whatsoever instance, use light pressure to reduce the chances of this happening. Thin disks as used for stainless steel are all-time for minimising friction and avoiding burning of the paint coating.

This G12SR4 Hitachi model from Amazon is rated at 6.2 amp / 120 volts (744 watt). Information technology's a good general purpose grinder, adequate for cutting and grinding well-nigh stuff around the home (this is the latest version of the grinder I use in the photos). You tin also employ information technology with a wire brush for de-rusting and removing paint. College powered versions are available up to yard watts from this advertiser for quicker cutting through heavier material.

Grinding by its very nature may involve using the grinder at all sorts of angles. Try to direct sparks away from you and watch out where they country. Remember all flammable fabric should take been placed safely out of range. Again watch out for kickback so you need to concur the grinder firmly. Re-arrange the guard if necessary to shield yourself from sparks and angle the airplane of the disk at a shallow angle of near 20 to xxx degrees to the workpiece.

When grinding, Sparks can be directed to one side.

When grinding, Sparks can be directed to one side.

Other Uses for Grinders

An angle grinder tin be used instead of a bench grinder for sharpening blades (due east.g. a lawn mower bract), plus the consumable disks are much cheaper to replace than the grinding wheel (stone) on a bench grinder.

Safety When Using a Wire Castor Near Edges

Take care when using a wire brush or grinding deejay most edges. Tilt the grinder slightly then that only the edge of the brush or disk furthest away from you spins out over the edges of a workpiece. If the beard move towards an border, they can snag, cause the grinder to jerk and kickback if y'all employ besides much pressure. Besides bristles of a grinding brush are much more likely to catch in clothing, cloth or whatever such loose material than a grinding or cutting disk, so articulate these items out of the way beforehand.

Bristles of a wire brush should travel out over the edge of the workpiece so they don't catch in the edge.

Bristles of a wire brush should travel out over the border of the workpiece so they don't take hold of in the edge.

Making Authentic Foursquare Cuts With a Grinder

If yous want to accurately cutting box section steel, bending iron, solid bar, pipe or other profile material, marker all around the perimeter using a square and scribe tool or Tippex marker and then cut each of the 4 faces in turn. You can also buy a jig which holds a grinder onto a hinged arm which can be raised upwardly and down so that foursquare cuts tin exist made. An alternative is a metallic cutoff saw. These normally have a 12 inch abrasive, or tungsten carbide tipped bract, enabling accurate foursquare or mitred cuts to be made on hollow or solid section steel up to 4 inch in cross section.

Metal cut off saw.

Cleaning Your Hands

Ideally yous should wear gloves to protect your hands from rust, oil and other grime on the material you're cut. However yous may need to dispense with gloves in gild to practice any marker out/fine work, and inevitably crud will stop upwards on hands. A hand cleanser will do a better chore than soap at removing grime, and many cleansers contain a fine abrasive (simply like toothpaste does) which helps cleaning. When you apply any hand cleaner, it'south a good thought to use a moisturizer subsequently to replace the natural oils done from skin. This prevents cracking or uncomfortable dryness if you suffer from eczema/dermatitis, psoriasis or other pare conditions.

Gloves protect easily, only if you have to piece of work barehanded, an abrasive hand cleanser will do a much better job than soap at removing grime and is pretty much essential. I utilise Dreumex anti-bacterial Pumice Heavy Duty Hand Cleaner, available from Amazon for removing oil and grease from my hands. It'south likewise adept for removing oil paint, tar, soot and general garden grime. (even used information technology once for taking black cycle grease out of a white carpet!)

Hi Mike,

Personally I would use the word "snag" to mean catching or seizing on an border. Due east.thousand. fabric catching on a jagged edge. Then for instance a disk might catch on the edge of sheet metal when cut rather than abrading it away. And then the disk could bounciness as the operator tries to control the grinder and perchance impacts it with a surface. Some other possibility is that a deejay isn't seated properly with the shoulder on the bushing not fitted properly into the primal hole of the deejay. The circular flange/nut piece could exist tightened, but the disk would be off heart by several mm and then bounciness on the work piece as it rotates. It would somewhen vesture into a circle equally the "cam" department wears away.

Mike on August 01, 2022:

Hi, Would you be able to offer a descriptive explanation as to the difference between 'snagging' and 'billowy' when using an electric angle grinder?

We take had an incident with injury and the use on the disk suggests that information technology bounced rather than snagged and I am looking to see if in that location is a testify to suggest in that location is a singled-out departure between the two.

Eugene Brennan (author) from Ireland on August 08, 2022:

Hi Jenn,

Information technology sounds desperate. You could apply a grinder, merely it would take forever to practise it, especially if the frame is solid. That much material would need to exist cut off rather than footing abroad. If the frame is aluminium, the disk tin also clog up. If the section that has to be removed is but a narrow strip information technology would take less time, simply yet be bad-mannered. It could also generate lots of sparks if the frame is steel, metal dust and likely fix off burn down and smoke alarms. It's not something I would recommend doing indoors in a building. If you start messing about with the door, information technology could weaken it and might too affect your insurance. The door would likewise look terrible with a piece footing out of information technology. If I was to remove a small strip of metal (i.e. i/four inch by peradventure not more than i/eight), I would probably utilize a reciprocating saw, but again it's not something I would recommend!

Jenn on Baronial 07, 2022:

Plus nosotros live in a NY apartment building and may not be able to get building approval to remove for structural reasons. Too the appliance company volition non accept the refrigerator back, which is why I am looking for a manner to get information technology in. Do you call up it is possible to sand out the metallic door frame plenty to fit it through?

Eugene Brennan (author) from Ireland on May 25, 2022:

How-do-you-do kkbose,

I wouldn't advise it.

Disks are really designed for cut steel, rock, sheet metallic, sparse waste pipe etc. When cutting these materials, waste textile is thrown out of the cut and carries the heat with it. If you lot endeavor to cut wood, condom or similar materials with a greater friction coefficient than steel, sawdust is likely to buildup around the disk, fire, clog around the deejay and potentially cause enough of a temperature rise to melt the bounden resin holding the disk together resulting in it shattering. Unlike a saw or chisel blade which actually cuts and shaves through wood, a grinder disk burns its way through textile. In that location is too the danger of the deejay binding in the cut if material builds upwardly, peculiarly if it's buried deeply in the woods.

If you don't have much woods to cut and don't want the expensive of ownership a power tool, get yourself a hacksaw, junior hacksaw, tenon saw, fretsaw or similar. The appropriate ability tools for cutting wood are a circular saw, jigsaw, reciprocating saw, multitool or bandsaw.

Eugene Brennan (author) from Republic of ireland on March 18, 2022:

The powers you quote, 1200, 1100 and 900 would be watts non kilowatt (i.e "w" not "kw).

Anyway for a given size of grinder, 5 inch in your instance, the rotational speed volition exist the same for all three powers, but a 1200 watt tool is capable of producing more torque, and as a upshot, strength at the edge of the deejay, without slowing down. Then it allows you lot to grind away fabric quicker since speed isn't reduced. The reason for the electric restriction and kickback stop is to try to cope with the extra force the motor can produce if the disk stalls completely or semi-stalls. The kick-back phenomenon is due to both the athwart momentum of the disk, and also the reaction of the workpiece due to the torque of the motor.

And so there is a potentially greater risk with the college power machine (just as in that location is with a larger 9 inch grinder), but the safety feature is supposed to cope with this gamble. The higher powered machine will let you work faster but is likely to be more expensive.

Hullo Many thank for your web log.

Practise you know if the take chances of lose control or brake the disc is the same with a 1200 Kw, 1100 Kw, 900 Kw... 5" angle grinder.

I want to buy a grinder.

But paddle switch, electromagnetic restriction, and kickback terminate, be only with 1200 Kw. Exercise you know why? Exercise yous think I can reduce the cost of my buy choosing a small 700 Due west grinder

Thanks.

I've never cut PVC pipage with a grinder until today, usually I just apply a hacksaw (or a reciprocating saw tin exist used). If the wall of the pipe is thick, e.g. heavy gage plastic gas line, oestrus could build up with the disk buried in the wall of the pipage, and friction could probably produce enough heat to cause the plastic to smoke. In whatsoever case unless yous are cutting piping regularly on a day to mean solar day basis, I would doubt whether the fumes would have whatsoever detrimental health effect.

I tried cutting some 1 1/2 PVC waste pipe. In that location was no smoking or fumes, just a slight olfactory property of hot PVC. It's important to use light pressure. Excessive pressure increases friction and this may cause called-for. Cutting produces very fine PVC dust and so it'south best to apply a dust mask.

I was reading about the dangers of called-for PVC pipage. Apparently burning PVC releases dioxin gases (nasty cancer causing gas). I figured that angle grinding PVC would release dioxin gas, seen as materials cut using an angle grinder heat up quite a bit.

Exercise you know if cutting PVC with an bending grinder does in fact crusade the release of nasty gases?

How-do-you-do Hal, I don't come across any reason why you lot can't grind while sitting down as long as you deflect the sparks away from yous. The merely danger I can think of is that if the grinder slips out of your hands, it is likely to drop down onto your legs or knees, causing injury. If your legs are nether a bench, plainly this is less likely. Also make sure the workpiece is well secured, otherwise if it is minor and the disk catches it, information technology can be thrown towards you. In the photos I am grinding while bending down and personally I discover it a better way of bracing my artillery by keeping them outstretched. Yous can also work at a bench with the work piece held in a vice.

When grinding metal that is below waist level is it ok to sit down and grind. I find this position to exist most comfy than angle awkwardly.

Cheers

Hi Kevin. The sparks volition always travel towards you as the lower side of the disk is traveling towards yous. Y'all can permit the sparks fly betwixt or to i side of your leg. Also by cut from the back of the metal, similar to the way timber is cut with a chainsaw, if the grinder binds it will be pulled abroad from you. This is safer than cutting from the front end as the disk can be thrown up out of the cut.

When grinding, yous tin concord the grinder so that the disk is angled about 15 degrees from the horizontal and sparks can exist thrown fully away from you.

Come across Bosch manual page half dozen http://docs-asia.origin.electrocomponents.com/webd...

You can also cut perpendicular to the way you lot are facing as they show in the manual

Hi

Possibly I'm incorrect but I have ever been taught to accept the grinder shoot the sparks away from you and come into the cut from the far side. That way if it binds it doesn't come up directly back at you. I'm dislocated about your approch on grinding. Information technology seems from the pictures that this is very bad-mannered to spread your legs to permit sparks to travel through. Please advise khardways@aol.com
